QuestionMy Isabella is pregnant which is exciting but it's my first time having a pregnant dog. She's a month along and everything seems fine as far as her pregnancy goes; however, I'm concerned about her hair. She has lost her hair around her butt and her belly, but that's it. She has also been scratching profusely, but I know that is flea related so I plan on getting Capstar to help with that since that is the only thing approved to give to a pregnant dog. I've been searching and reading about "blowing coat" while pregnant and the description fits. Could that be it???
AnswerHi. That could be what's going on with her, but I would take her in for a check up just to be safe. I am aware that your breed has some skin issues, and hormones can bring them on. Some dogs also have flea bite dermatitis. It can cause a dog to loose hair because the dog is allergic to the flea's saliva. Actually, I have my mother's old doberman/collie mix at my house, and she suffers from it as well. We have to fight hard to keep fleas down. And usually, when a bitch blows her coat due to pregnancy, it gets thinned out, not really bald. Good luck!
