mammary gland tumor

My shsitzu is due to have puppies any day now. She still have not produce milk
and i notice this lump next to her breast. Could this be tumor? is it safe to
breast feed when the mother has tumor? will it be pass on to the puppies?

Answer
Hi Anna.  Some dogs milk does not come in until just before the puppies are born.  Tumors and or cancer are not contagious, so if the lump is either, it will not harm the puppies.  However, if you feel that the lump might be a tumor or cancer, then I suggest getting her in to see your vet as soon as possible.
