Question
I have a two year old Siberian Husky who is AKC registered with four AKC registered bloodlines to him( both Parents, all 4 grandparents, and all 4 great grandparents ) A lady my neighbor knows has asked us if we will stud our male with her AKC registered bitch, we know nothing about doing this or what we should ask for stud fee or how to write a contract or what to put in the contract we don't want a pick of the litter I have spend hours looking on line but no where have I found what we would have to put in a contract nor how to figure the cost of stud fee, The lady with the bitch said she would bring her to our house to breed in which I would be watching over them she also said we might have to get them together more than once to be sure it takes. I'm not real sure about studding my male out mainly because I don't know enough about it, any help with any of my questions would be great. I live in the Wichita Kansas area. Thank You.

Answer
Hi Chris

A contract should be in writing and iron clad.  You need to be very clear who is repsonsible for what including:

- The dollar value (typically the cost of one pup).
- The male is unproven, what happens if he can't produce?
- When payment is due for the breeding? Open confirmation or prior to breeding?
- Vet care - who is responsible for the cost of the litter?
- If no puppies result do you give another breeding?
- How many puppies constitute a litter?
- What happens if the pups die while in the female's care? Will you still get paid?
- Where the breeding will take place?

You should insist on brucellois testing on the female as this STD is very contagious and can cause sterility in your male.

The female should come to your house for breeding.  But what is she's injured during mating? Who is responsible.

There are endless questions and answers and it may go smoothly, but I would still insist on a written contract.

But just as a FYI, we've been breeding for 25 years and never stud out. But that's just my opinion.

Good luck
