Question
a friend was watching our 4 standards while my family was welcoming back my son in law home from afghanistan two days ago. She called this morning to tell me she had inadvertantly allowed our female out with the boys, one of who has not been neutered yet.  He is 11 months and has had an infection in his foot from cutting his pad in our woods... She found them tied this afternoon .. Our female is only 15 months old and was in her second heat.. the male is a small standard and she is bigger by 3 inches and 8 lbs..
Needless to say, I am angry at my friend for being careless, I made it quite clear not to allow her out with the intact male..
We hadn't spayed the female since I feel it should wait until they have reached 18 months and have done alot of their growth.
I am worried about her going through a pregnancy at such a young age.  Breeding is the very furthest thing from my mind... luckily I used to work at a shelter and have helped with deliveries of both dogs and horses..
How do you think she will do at this age and any advise will be greatly appreciated...

Answer
Hi Kay

On the plus side, if your male has an infection it will affect his sperm count.  So the breeding may not take.

If your female is mature mentally, she should have no issues.

It sounds like you are a responsible  and concerned dog owner. If she does take, I'm confident that you won't have any problems putting this great pups in forever homes.

Good luck.
