Walking my bitch after having a litter

Question
Hi,  my Golden Retriever bitch had a litter of 9 pups 11 days ago now and we haven't as yet resumed her walks. When do you think its okay to start walking her again? I've had mixed info with regards to the possibility of infection to the puppies from something she may pick up during a walk.
We have a dog shower and so she will be fully cleaned off when she comes back however I am still worried about her greeting other dogs (as they do) and sniffing other dogs pooh etc. What do you recommend as I do feel she is desperate to get out.
By the way she is such a great Mum, its her first litter and she's been such an attentive Mum, we have beautiful contented healthy pups. Thanks very much in advance.

Answer
Hi Kate

Your female may not want to leave her pups just yet but it's important to start her walking again.  You don't have to go for miles but around the block will keep her muscles from stiffing up. And get her back in shape.

If you female has all her shots, she will be immune to everything but worms.  She should be de-worm along with the pups regardless as some worms lay dominant in the muscle and only become "alive" once the pregnancy hormones kick in.  De-worming pups with a light de-wormer at 2 weeks is safe.

If of course, she is not vaccinated for things like Parvo and Kennel Cough, walk her on a leash in a area not frequented by dogs.

Good luck
