Breeding Chi

Question
I have a 3 Lyra old female getting ready to go into to heat. I have been very careful in the past about keeping her away from males because I feel that she is only 3.9 pounds and the risk is not worth it. My boyfriend wants to breed her with a cousins male who is about 6-7lbs. I am concerned because of the weight difference, Please give me some sound advice on how to convince the boyfriend this is not a good ideal and we risk losing her......

Answer
Hi Cathy

Any time you make the choice to breed there is risk to the female. But with most breeds the male is going to be larger than the female. That's just the facts.

A healthy Chi should have no problem whelping.  However, you want to keep her active, and on a good diet (no puppy food) and supplements.

You should know the lines of the male. If he's produced before, what size are the pups? What are the size of his dam and sire and their parents?  Have the fontanel's closed on both sides of the breeding pair in question?

Also if you go ahead with the breeding, have the male tested for brucellios.

Good luck
