new puppy

Hi Renee, I emailed you a couple weeks ago regaurding my Daschund "Abby" and her ONE little baby she had. Well,, the baby is now 2 weeks old, my new question is... should I limit his feedings? He is SO FAT!! Being the only pup she had, he has free run of the kitchen, :) and my heavens the little guy is round! What should I do? Also, when do the eyes begin to open?

Hi Tricia. lol I don't mean to laugh, but I like the way you put that, free run of the kitchen. I have to ask you a few questions. Is his bowel movements normal? If they're not runny, or look off, then he's probably doing just fine. Pups will actually get diarrhea if they are being fed too much. Is he moving around ok? If he's having trouble getting around the box because of his roundness, or to mom, then you may need to cutt back a tad bit. Since I can't actually see how round he really is, you may want to take him to the vet for a check up to see what he thinks. As for the eyes, they should start to open anytime now. If they don't, then you may have to take him to the vet anyway, and let the vet open them for him. I'd say though, that you should start to see them opening up really soon. They can do it overnight it seems. As long as his eyes aren't puffy, or have drainage, then they're probably ok. Good luck, and let me know how the little guy does please!
