Question
I have two dachshunds...both about 1 and 1/2 years old.  The female just gave birth to her first litter of puppies.I took these puppies in because they were living in an unsanitary environment...these two are siblings and the previous owner did not get her spayed.  The five puppies look fine...adorable...but the father (brother) is going crazy!  I have her in a huge crate to stay with her puppies and he remains in the kennel. He constantly barks and paces. She wants nothing to do with him. These two dogs have no been separated a day in their life...any advice?

Answer
It's important that you keep them separated as the female has to bond and care for her pups.  And the male may be jealous and try to harm them.

Use the hose, and give him a squirt of water with a stern NO! When he starts.  Or give him a bone to keep him occupied.

Just as a FYI:  Interbreeding is a tool used by some breeders, but it's not without it's drawbacks. Any tiny flaw in their genetic makeup will come in this litter.  It's best to have all the pups sold on a spay/neuter contract or done before they are placed.
