Question
Is it possible for a bitch to keep her body from delivering a puppy? I have a pomeranian due with her second litter who is acting like she is trying to ignore and even stop the puppies from being born. Her first litter was a single pup that she immediately ignored after delivery (wouldn't lick or even look at it) and we ended up giving the pup to another mom to raise. They are both pregnant and due again and we are keeping them together. The puppy is in position to be born and she is showing signs of being in labor (turning circles, nesting, etc.) but she is not progressing. She is at most 60 days pregnant so we are not at a crucial point yet, but we want to be prepared.

Answer
Pamela,

Yes it is possible for a bitch to stop her labor. I am assuming that she has not absorbed the litter but just does not want to push out. Usually when you have a bitch that does not want to lick, clean or even acknowledge the puppy, I don't suggest breeding that bitch again because she is likely to do it on the next one, or even kill the puppies. I don't really understand the part about keeping them together? If she is at 60 days but has not began pushing then you may still have a few days to go. They can usually go up to day 70 but that is not recommended. If you see that she does begin to push but she is struggling to get a puppy out, or she cannot get the puppy out for an extended period of time, you will most likely need to take her to the vet for a c-section. If that is the case, at that time I would have her spayed, that way you wont need to worry about another surgery in the future. Watch her temperature as well, once it drops down to around 98 degrees puppies should follow soon afterwards.
