Answer
Hi Patricia

If you have no experience with whelping I would suggest and recommend that your female be brought into a vet. There are a number of reason her milk may not be coming in or drying up.

Was all the afterbirth accounted for after delivery?  If she has retained any of the afterbirth or a pup, this can create a serious infection and in turn, cause her milk to dry up. Your vet will give her a shot of oxytocin to aid in letting down her milk and making her uterus contract.

During the first week after delivery you want to take the females temperature at least once a day.  A temperature of 103 F or higher can indicate a problem such as retained placenta, acute metritis (infected uterus)or mastitis (breast conditions).

Regardless, you want to examine her milk for color, consistency and quality.  If the milk is stringy, yellowish or discolored it may be infected.

Make sure your female is eating a HIGH quality kibble as her caloric requirements increase when she's nursing.   If she loses weight she will fail to produce milk. Supplement with canned or cooked meat and/or cottage cheese.  You want to make sure you female is receiving adequate calcium during nursing. So you may want to include a vitamin / mineral supplement.   If your female is tense and requires extra energy, add three tablespoons of vegetable oil for each pound of dry dog food and vitamin B supplements if her milk supply stays low to marginal.

Good luck!
