Question
QUESTION: Hello!

I have a girl that only comes into season once a year.  I know that this is typical for wolves and Basenjis, but am curious as to what factors may be involved with my girl.  (Australian Shepherd)  She did have a litter of 9 last year at 3 years old.  She had an easy pregnancy, smooth delivery and was an excellent mom.  She's very healthy, with no known health issues and her mom comes in every 8 1/2 to 9 months (but was spaced farther apart when younger).

Thanks in advance for your time!

Jamie

ANSWER: Hi Jamie

Where are you located?
Is she an outside or inside dog?
What do you feed her?
How is her weight?

All can contribute to a longer season.

QUESTION: We are in western Washington State and she is mainly indoors.  She is currently eating Dog Lovers Gold (www.dogloversgold.com) and is at a good weight -- approximately 40 lbs and 19.5" tall.

Thanks so much for your quick response!

Jamie

Answer
If she spends a lot of time indoors, which happens in the colder climates, you can help boost her internal clock by leaving a light bulb, full spectrum lighting works best (available at any hardware store) on 24 hours.  Leave the light bulb on over her area.    It's very common for dogs living in the colder (and darker) demographics not to come into as often.

I would also recommend a all food fortifier or salmon oil to give her a boost.

Good luck
