Question
Hello.. My Chi just had a litter of 9 pups, but 2 died at birth.. she did great with the whole process, which we were surprised considering she is only about 12 lbs.and young! We have been feeding the pups evap milk/water to try to help her wean them, but she still feeds them some...We are also giving them some eukanuba puppy food, but not so sure they like it? I would like advice on that part, and also wanted to ask if it is normal for Mom to be spotting a little off and on? the pups are about 61/2wks now, and we still see some blood, but not much..
Sorry one more ?.. does it matter if u wait more than 6wks to get shots and deworming done?
Thanks so much,
Karen

Answer
Hi Karen

First let me say... "Holy Cow" your CHI had 9 pups!

With a litter that size I expect the dam to bleed for a month or more.  So the spotting is okay and normal.

Going on 7 weeks I would supplement their diet with raw or cooked chicken hearts, gibblets, etc.  I'm not a fan of the Eukanuba puppy and think that there are some better quality products out there.

Personally, we don't give puppy shots until they are 8 weeks old on the recommendation of our holistic vet.  The shots don't take effect until then.   De-worming should have been done already, even a few times.  The dam should also get a good dose of de-wormer.

Good luck
