My female black lab is going into heat for the first time...

Question
Today I found blood on my sheets where my lab sleeps and i checked her and she is bleeding. She is now 8 months so i'm sure she is about to go into heat. I'm looking for any tips you can give me to help her during this time. Also we have a 7 year old black lab and he is 120 pounds, so i know its gonna be hard to keep him away from her. Any tips to help with that would be great too.

Thank you.

Answer
Hi Megan

She's not ABOUT to go into heat, she IS in heat.

If you don't want any pups (and at 8 months, she's to young), you MUST keep the male apart from the female.  Use a crate, drop him off at the in-laws, etc.  I hear every day about "accidents".  You have a responsibility to your female and any pups to make sure that accident's don't happen.  Not just with your male but she'll be sending out a "call" to all the boys in the neighborhood that she's ready to be mated.

Don't let her out of your sight for a moment, and keep her on a short lead when she goes outside.

She will be hyper sensitive so Vitamin B supplement in her diet may help.

Good luck
