Inducing a season with my Boxer Bitch

Question
Hi Renee, I have Two Red and White Boxers, My male is almost 6 and has never been a sire, My Bitch is 18 months old and I would really like them to have a litter before my Boy is too old. Is there a way of inducing a season with my Bitch? They have both passed all the health checks and are both great dogs. I hate the thought of my boy not leaving a legacy behind when he leaves us. Many Thanks Angel.

Answer
Hi Angel. There is nothing that I know of that can safely bring a dog into heat, you'll just have to wait her out.:-) Has she had a heat cycle yet? I would wait until your girl is closer to two. This will let your girl finish growing, and she'll be a better mom to the pups. Your boy at 6 isn't over the hill yet, and he has the extra time to wait on her. My old guy that passed away at 13 years old sired a litter when he was 9. He sired 8 of the biggest, healthiest pups that we've ever had here. So it's definitely possible for the older guys to get the job done. I'd just let your girl finish growing some before she's bred. If she hits two and has never had a heat cycle, then I'd take her in for a check up to make sure that everything's ok. One thing that does seem to help girls come in to heat is to be kept with other girls that are in heat, they seem to bring each other in. Good luck!
