Question
I have two shar pie and it is her 3rd heat she is 2 he is 9 months. she is on day 7 she is mounting him and he is showing no interset only when i first let her out in the morning and afternoon he just smells her and licks her and thats it after a minute or so.  She is only bleeding lightly and is swollen. on sunday morning he had  been with her for a hour and when i saw him he had the hard bulb in his penis as though they had been together,, im not convinced though can he get excited by himself is this a good sigh of his sexual ability developing. will i need to help him at all he is taller than her if she is hunping him is this normal is she comming in to her egg cycle soon should i lock em together at this point or wait longer.

Answer
Dogs usually are ready to breed on or just after the thirteenth day after bleeding begins. To be absolutely SURE of a successful breeding take your girl now to the vet for a progesterone and cytology. He can give you a much better idea by checking hormone levels every few days. Separate your dogs and only put them together for a couple of hours morning and evening AFTER the thirteenth day. This prevents frustration from building and sometimes frustration will cause your male to give up. You shouldn't need to help him these things generally work out on their own. Leaving them alone to deal with a tie is NOT a good idea and could result in serious injury to one or both dogs.
good luck
