Question
QUESTION: I have a 2 year old female mini long-haired doxie and a 3 year old male doxie...she finished bleeding 2 days ago..the male is trying to mount her but doesn't seem to stay on very long and i don't think he has ever actually penetrated her...she is flagging at times and seems to flirt..but then if it gets painful yelps and runs...how long after the bleeding stops is she fertile?  i am leaving them in a spare bathroom together and checking on them constantly..when should i get worried that we may not have puppies?

ANSWER: Hi. What day exactly of her heat cycle is she on?

QUESTION: she started bleeding on March 6th and stopped on March 15th...so i guess that would make today..thursday day 14...

ANSWER: You said that she yelps when he mounts, that could be some of the problem there. She may be scaring the male. You may want to have her vagina checked for strictures, this could cause pain during intercouse, making the female not want to breed. You don't have much time left during this cycle. They very well could have bred while they were put up, you not seeing it. This is a bad idea, to leave two dogs alone when one is in heat. I'm not yelling at ya here, just telling you. If they did breed, they could hurt each other while tied. If this happened, it may be why your girl yelps, she may either be in pain, or she may just be scared. The best thing to do if you're having problems getting two dogs to breed, is to keep them a part. Keep them where they can still see/smell each other, but they can't get to each other. Do this for a day, and then let them together again. This works a lot better than many would think. If she doesn't take this heat, then I would have your vet check her vagina out to make sure there's no injury or strictures. If that is all good, then you may have to resort to A.I., or maybe think about using an experienced stud next time. It really can make a difference. Has she completely stopped bleeding, and is her vulva still swollen? One more thing, she yelps when he mounts, right? Could she have a possible injury to a leg or her back that causes pain when the male mounts?

QUESTION: She has no injury ..i think she is just tired of him at this point..she is growling at him now...i will seperate them like you suggested and see if that will help...she is still very swollen...how many more days is she fertile?

Answer
usually, after 14 days, that's it for that cycle. I've known dogs that have bred late into their cycle, but it's not too common. If she's growling at him, then I'd say she's done for this time. If nothing happens this cycle, then I'd have her vagina looked at by the vet to make sure there's nothing wrong with her that could cause pain, or other problems with breeding. You may have to resort to A.I., or use a different male. You can also do progesterone testing the next cycle so you will know exactly when she ovulates.
