Question

Jax, olde english bull
My husband and I would like to breed our male olde english bulldogge.  He is 24 weeks.  We were wondering how old he has to be before we can breed him, and what we should do before we try to find him a female.  All the websites I have checked say they go into heat around 6 to 9 months, is that true?  Also he seems to be liking his pillow a lot these days, actually I cant keep him off it.  Does this mean he's ready to mate?  Any advise would be great.  Thank You.

Answer
Hi. A large breed dog needs to be close to 2 years old before breeding, 2 years or older is best. This includes the males. They need the extra time to finish growing before the strains of breeding is put on them. A female can come into heat at about 6-9 months, the larger breeds may wait longer. However, they should NOT be bred their frist cycle. Again, waiting until they are two, or close to it is better. What you need to do is to go to your breed parent club's eb site, and see what type of genetic testing needs to be done on your breed. Each breed has their own set of genetic problems that needs to be tested for before breeding. You'll also want to know if your boy is breeding quality, conformationaly wise, health and temperament ise as well. As for the pillow thing, this does not mean that he's ready to be bred. Just that he's starting to go threw those nasty teenage years and is hitting 'puberty'. Good luck!
