Question
QUESTION: So, we just bought a male dog who's 9 weeks old.  We already have a female dog, and she just turned 4.  We were hoping to eventually mate them- is this possible? Will she be too old once he becomes the correct age?

Thanks!

ANSWER: Hi. Has she ever had a litter before? If not, then I wouldn't suggest breeding her for the first time at that age.

QUESTION: no she hasn't had a little before.  bummer! we really wanted to breed them :(  what kind of risks are there when breeding a dog of her age?

Answer
Hi again. :-) Please forgive me for not getting back to you sooner. My computer had a really bad virus.

Well, the thing is, when a dog is to be bred, most people suggest breeding her when she's younger. That way, her joints and ligaments and such can stretch easier. I'm not saying it's impossible to breed her at this age, as a matter of fact, some breeders actually wait until their dogs are about 4-5 before breeding them for the first time. Just make sure she's in really good health and physical condition. Be prepared just in case she does need a c-section. She may have a harder time with labor, or may have a slow labor. Just be prepared, and talk to your vet. He will be your best friend when you breed a dog. :-)
