pregnant dog ingested very salty broth

Question
my IDIOT husband fed our two dogs, one of which is the pregnant dam, and the other the sire, his LEFTOVER from dinner! It was a very salty broth made from soy sauce and some wine steamed together with pork. He thought it since it was a relatively healthy dish it would be safe for the dogs. I was furious. I didn't know what he did until it was too late. I'm taking her to the vet today. It's early morning, and I was wondering. Do I have anything to fear?

Answer
Hi Laura.  Unless you called your vet and was told to take your pregnant dog in, then I don't think the salty broth did any harm to her or the puppies.  Of course, it would have been better if she hadn't eaten the broth, but just keep an eye on her (and your husband - lol) and watch for any symptoms such as:  vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, etc.  If any of these symptoms are exhibited by either of your dogs, then I suggest that you consult with your veterinary staff.

Good luck, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions.

Sincerely,
Penny DiLoreto
