Question
Hi i have a question hopefully you would be able to help me out. My female
dog went n heat and on the 7th, 9th, 11th i had her bred with a stud dog
thats 11 yrs old. Oh they are yorkies btw. I wasnt very happy that my breeder
used him because last time she didnt get pregnant with him. I also know of
someone who used him as a stud and only had 1 puppy. Im thinking he is
too old to be a stud but my breeder insists he is still good. I think he is too
old to be a stud and i have expressed that to her, but she still used him
because he got to her when i left my dog with her and at the risk of mixing
genes we just used him so that we can register her pups with akc. Im worried
that she didnt take to the breeding and we would have to wait again. Do you
think the stud is too old? Or his sperm may not be as good as it used to be?
My bitch had a litter of 3 before so i know shes capabl5e of having puppies,
also shes only 3 yrs old. Anyways pls get back to me i appreciate all you
help. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Ryan.  I agree with you that this 11 year old dog is probably not as potent as he use to be.  Especially since he failed to produce a litter with your dog the last time you mated him with your female.

I hope you have a written Stud Service agreement with the owner of the stud dog.  If so, then I would also hope that the name of the Stud Dog is listed on your agreement.  If your breeder did not use the stud you agreed to pay Stud Service for, then you might be able to receive a refund if your female fails to produce a litter.

For future reference, if you you submit DNA samples to the AKC, they can sort out the puppies and respective fathers, so it would not have been a problem to go ahead and breed your dog with another male while at your breeders.

The AKC will send you, and your breeder, a DNA collection kit - which is a simply a Q-tip looking like thing that you use to swab the inside of your dogs mouth and then send back to the AKC.

All breeding stud dogs must have their DNA collected and on file with the AKC once they have fathered 5 litters. So, I'm assuming that your breeders dog's DNA is already on file.

Good luck, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions.

Sincerely,
Penny DiLoreto
