Question
QUESTION: We have had Danes for 20 years and have successfully whelped and raised some 36 puppies. We have not had a bitch (lately have had rescues) that we considered good enough to pass on her genes until we purchased Bristol as a puppy. It has been 10 years since we bred. We are breeding her to a show judges male. All testing has been good. We are in the process of testing for optimal breeding time. I need to give supplements immediately after breeding or keep her on same diet until later in preg. She currently eats California Natural with occasional garlic and yeast tablets mostly because she likes them.

ANSWER: Hi Joy
It sounds like you've done and are doing all the right things. I know you are excited to be having new pups after such a long period with no puppy breath :).
You're doing great with the dog food, I would add supplements, 1500 mgs of vit c split into three 500 mg doses per day. vitamin E, B complex, omegas, and flax seed oil.  A month into her pregnancy you should switch her to puppy food and a couple of weeks before her due date I would add some all natural cottage cheese or yogurt once a day. LOTS of fluids too.
Congratulations!

QUESTION: Is there a supplement that has most of what you recommend? Thanks for the response
Joy

Answer
Actually Fosters and Smith have some really good supplements. But I prefer to add the flax seed oil and vitamin c myself. There's a great omega/vitamin E supplement on their website
and I think you will find pretty much everything you are looking for there as well. The vitamin C you can just grab from the vitamin aisle at Wal Mart or any other pharmacy. Same with the B complex. :)
Hope this helps
