Question
I have two mini schnauzers. My girl just got done with her second heat, and we actually let our boy get after her this time so we are pretty sure she is going to have puppies. She is only 12 lbs and he is 22 lbs. How many puppies do you think her body can handle, and do you think they will be small or larger like the male. Sorry if this seems like a lame question, but I kinda need a little heads up. thanks

Answer
Hi John

How many pups did her dam have?  What days in her heat was she bred?

A female produces all the eggs she is going to have in her life-time.  Her body releases them at each heat. She may release 1, 2 or half a dozen.  If she comes from a large litter there is a chance she will produce a large litter.   Because the male can produce over ten million "a go", it doesn't matter how many she releases, if he's viable they will get fertilized.

You will get a combination of both dogs, some large, some small. That's how Mother Nature works. But my advice, find out from the breeder what you can about her dam and that will give you an indication what to expect from her first pregnancy.

Good luck
