Question
HELP!!!! I had been at a tenants home to collect rent and serve eviction since I had just bought the building and the tenants were not even close to being sanitary or quiet. They came up to me as i was leaving and offered me a 5 week old maltese puppy (They said it was 5 weeks)I sort of fealt as tho i may be rescuing the puppy given the fact that they had 2 other maltese that did not look too well taken care of. I accepted and drove the puppy right to the vet to be checked. I was concerned that he was too young to leave mom, but vet said he was healthy and ok to come home with me. I already had a male 1 year old chocolate lab at home..male/male dog ok. Here comes the problem...My husband always grumbles when an animal is coming home with me however he saw a family with a puppy (a maltese) and they were throwing the puppy around, swinging it by the tail, etc. It turns out they were the same family we were trying to evict from our property. The same family who gave me the puppy at 5 weeks. He offered to buy the puppy from them to save the puppy from the torment. They took the money and my grumbling husband rescued her.:) Now they are approximately 8 months old and I have never had a female dog so...being a new experience i should have done my homework. They have gotten tied up several times in the last few days. I have tried to keep them seperate but when i am at work the kids get home from school (i Have three kids, three dogs, three cats) they let them out and they have been getting stuck when attempting to mate!!!! I do not know what to do. Can she get pregnant this young? Can he produce sperm this young? And I believe they are brother and sister. These two have been rescued from a horrid home and are now very happy but i am afraid that this will kill her being so young. Can you help at all? Thanks so much!

Answer
Hi Elizabeth

Your concerns are well grounded.  In that situation I would take the female immediately to the vet and have her given the equivalent to the "morning after" pill.

The I would consider getting them both fixed.  If they had a rough start it would best to make them pets and let them live out a long and happy life without reproducing.
