English Staffy Breeding

Question
Hi I was just wondering if you could please tell me when the right time was to breed our staffy.  She has had three heats and is nearly two years old.  We have arranged a male to service her but are unsure of the right time in her heat for her to stand.  I understand it can be quite traumatic for the dog and those around her.  I would also like to know how long the pregnancy is and how long before the pups can leave her.  Also is there any particular book that is good that I can purchase to help with our lack of knowledge.  Thanks in anticipation. Kim

Answer
Hi Kim. Most breeders try on days 11 and 13, or on days 12 and 14. Watch her signs as to when she'll be ready. She'll flag, her bleeding will lighten in color and frequency, and her vulva will soften up. It's best to keep the pups until they're at least 8 weeks old. My favorite book is "successful Dog Breeding". I LOVE this book. You can go to amazon.com and search for dog breeding to find a few good ones, but this one is my favorite. Good luck, and let me know if I can help with anything else.
