Question
QUESTION: my four year old jack russell was covered by a male jack 8 days ago and everything went well she was on her 10th day and she was happy to recieve him however today she has had spotting of blood on her bedding she does not have a temp nor is she unwell or down i have her in a quiet place with clean bedding to monitor the spotting but could this be the early signs of a miscarriage and if so what do i need to look for and what is my best plan of action thanks

ANSWER: Hi Susan

It could be that she was just too early at 10 days and is ovulating now.   Typically breeding takes place between the 13th and 15th day.

Did she bleed for 10 days at the beginning of her heat? If the blood is a light pink color there is no need for alarm.

QUESTION: thank you for the reply, in answer to your question she bleed for approx 6 days and on the 10th day of seeing the male she accepted him having had the dog since she was born her season was typical of all her others so i felt that all had gone by the book allowing for possibly missing the first day of her season which would bring her to the 11th date in general been a farmers girl i feel the whole events went very well until the blood loss now if this is now an extension of her ovulation would that mean she would still accept a male at a further date

Answer
Mother Nature always know best -- so if your female is standing and flagging the male, I would let them continue on.

The only problem I have with just counting the days is that you can't know for certain when your female is ovulating.  Unless of course, you've done testing and know the timing of your female ovulation or if you have an experienced male who will "tell" you when a female is ovulating.
