Question
I have two boxers. I have bred my Angel 2 times and kept a pup (Halo) from her last litter.  Halo is now 5 and is about to have her 2nd litter.  She bred on 9/12.  Yesterday was her due day.  Her temp is still 99.8 and she is eating like she is starved.  She has not gotten as big this time as her last litter (8).  So I'm am guessing not as many pups. Both she and Angel's temp peaked on the 1st day, drooped on the 62nd day and pups arrived on the 63rd day.  We are now into the 64th day and no signs.  I can feel pups moving.  When should I get worried.  I am taking her on a long walk and see if this will help.

Answer
Hi Janet. I'm sorry for taking so long in getting back to you. I hope that she has had her puppies by now. If not, then I'd suggest taking her to the vet for a check up. People go by the day the dog was bred for a due date. However, just because a dog was bred on that day doesn't mean that she became pregnant on that day. The sperm will live inside of the female for up to one week, and the eggs needs a few dys to mature before they are ready to be fertilized. So, if a dog was bred on let's say Monday, she may not have actually become pregnant until Wednesday, just as an example. This is usually why a dog goes over her due date by a few days. When the dog goes over day 65 though, it's best to get a check up done just to be on the safe side. If her temp hasn't dropped, and she's acting normal, then she most likely just needs a few days more. I have known dogs to go to day 70 safely, but it still concerns me when they go past day 65. If she hasn't done anything yet, then I'd get her to the vet for a check up. Again, I'm sorry it took me a few to get back to you, I hope that everything's ok. Let me know if I can help with anything else.
