Breeding French Bulldogs

Question
QUESTION: Hello Joyce,

I have two french bulldogs who have bred for the first time. The bitch is 2 years old and this was her third heat. The stud is a 2.5 year old. They were raised together and very affectionate so breeding required no help.

I understand that breeding frenchies can be particularly difficult and often require assistance. However, on her 12th day in heat the bitch allowed a tie. They successfully tied numerous times over the course a four days for half hour periods. We actually canceled our insemination appointment with the vet because it seemed unneeded.

Do frenchies still require artificial insemination even if they tie because of physical reasons? (ie: Do the narrow hips prevent fertilization of the eggs?)

ANSWER: Hi Iris

Typically breeders will do A.I. on Frenchies (or any smaller bully breed) because of the male is larger or female is too small, or just because they don't know any better.

There is no reason or rule that says they must be A.I.'d.   Good for you for producing a line of free breeders. Now if the female is a free whelper, you're set!

QUESTION: We would be thrilled if a c-section weren't needed. Our vet is prepared if it is.

Right now, we can't even be positive that she's pregnant yet. We see early signs but in reality, it's only been a week and we are most likely projecting our wishes onto her behavior. I was never worried this much with my American Bulldogs...

Answer
You want to keep your female active and on an adult food.  Puppy food given to a expecting female will increase the size of the pups, which can cause complications in whelp.

Our little Frenchie girl has been a free whelper, so I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Good luck!
