Question
I am very proud to announce that my rat terrier delivered four absolutely beautiful puppies last night. And did it in a car. We had to travel for a funeral, had no choice but to take her, were totally prepared and she did great, esp for a first time mom. The puppies are all small, there was no problem with delivering too big of a puppy as my question was concerned with. The first and third were breech however and there were some tense moments trying to deliver the first one, but the second breech came out like a breeze. The last one had its paws up next to its face so it was a difficult one for her also. She is an excellent mother, havent had to show her how to do anything. I do have three other questions though. Before (or after) one of the pups, not sure which it is, she had DARK green discharge and had tissue that actually looked like green food colored 'string' coming out of her. She gradually ate it and it became normal color and the next puppy (the second breech) had no sac around him. Was this normal?? What makes it THAT color of green. I had read that some greenish discharge is normal but this was a really weird color....we thought she was going to have a Clingon puppy :). Nxt question, she still has a little brownish red discharge, is this normal? And, I feel really stupid asking this, but cant find the answer to someone else who asked about this...how do I tell the sex of the puppies? I just assumed they were all male, but I do see a little difference. Its been 16 years since Ive whelped puppies and have forgotten alot. P.S. As far as the diet issue turned out, as I said the pups are small, and she actually was VERY skinny after delivery and is now ravenous, but no longer looks emaciated. Shes such an attentive mom that she wont leave their side to eat or drink so I have to sit rt there with her to assure her she and the pups are safe. She is SO amazing. Thanks for your previous help and in advance for this help. Sharon

Answer
Congratulations!

First "breech" in pups not uncommon, in fact it's considered normal.

The "food color string" was in fact the sac of the pup without one, another common occurrence.  It's important that all the placenta's are expelled. The color is waste, liquid and blood.  Green is normal in dog birth.

Flip the pups over, the boys have their "parts" just south of the stomach. The females don't have that but do have little vulvas'.  I've know breeders that have mistaken sexes.

Now is the time to up her food intake, put her on the puppy food and supplement with good canned food or beef heart, liver or kidney.  Everything in moderation, you don't want her to get the runs.

Good luck
