Dog season/mating

Question
My bitch usually has long seasons lasting 3/4 weeks (bleeding bright/dark red blood all the way through).  She has had 2 litters before and has always mated on day 14/15 and stopped bleeding a few days after mating.  She has now been in season for 35 days and is still bleeding.  She mated days 14 and 15 with a 20 minute tie each time.  She had her herpes injection a few days after mating.  She appears perfectly fine in herself, very loving and has vomited only once.  Could she still be pregnant and should I be at all worried about the bleeding.  The vet is very none commital.  Many thanks for taking the time to read this.

Answer
Hi Jane

Personally all antibiotics should be giving PRIOR to mating, usually at the start of a season.  As Herpes is a virus, there is no particular reason for administering antibiotics, unless a secondary bacterial infections occurs.

Larger dogs tend to bleed longer but that being said, 35 days is a little long.  I'm certain you are accurate with your days so I would suspect something else.  A quick progestrone test will tell if you where your female is out in her season.

Is the bleeding more of a spotting or is it heavy?
