Breeding Husky

Question
We are considering purchasing a 3 y/o female husky and possibly breeding her with our 4 y/o male husky. Any suggestions on what to take into account? What is the breeding process for huskies like? I have read about the gestation period (approx 63 days) but otherwise I am a bit out of my league. I would appreciate any websites/books to get us started on this process. Thanks in advance for your expertise!

Answer
Hi Renee

You want to know the bloodlines of both parents on this female.  Going back at least 3 generations.  You want to ensure that her lines aren't carriers of any hereditary defects, skin issues, low immune systems, etc.   If you are buying her from a breeder you want to know if she's been bred before, if so, the size of her litter, the difficulty in whelp. And most importantly why would a breeder get rid of a quality breeding female?   Breeders I know, myself included, don't part with their top breeding animals but will part with the "difficult" females.

There isn't much required with Huskies, they can take care of "business" by themselves.  There are some great reference material out there both on the internet and in print. Breed specific bookis are the best.  I would recommend contacting other breeders of Huskies and get their knowledge.

Good luck
