Question
hi my yorkie just had 3 pups.at12 days old she got hypocalcaemia she was on  drip for few hours but she is now ok .she is 2 years old it is her first litter, would it be safe to mate her again say when she is 5 or 6 years old .will this happen again.regards gemma

Answer
Hi Gemma:

If she encountered this once either she wasn't receiving the proper nutritional requirements or her body doesn't process it well or in a way that safe-guards her body. Usually, in my experience, if a bitch has one episode I don't risk her having puppies as I fear it's al;ways a possible genetic trait her puppies may inherit & I won't risk her life just to have more puppies. I'm too conservative about putting her health in jeopardy so I spay a female when this occurs. Just my opinion but I'm not willing to take the risk again.
