QuestionMags is a 4 year old German shepherd (dob-1-11-04). She has had 2 false pregnancies. Never had pups. I am trying to breed her. What can cause false pregnancies and how is it corrected? Zee also 4 years gave signs of pregnancy, but no pups. Peg (12-5-05) through out her estrus cycles just sits down and will not even let a male near her. I have used different males who have bred others with success.
AnswerHi Conna
Are all these females related? False pregnancies is common enough and occurs 6 to 10 weeks after estrus. But to have three in one kennel raises a red flag for me.
It most cases where females experience false pregnancies, studies have shown that they have a higher rate of always going through them and it's recommended that the female be spayed. However, it is yet to be determined why that is the case.
I would check thyroid levels and also if these females haven't caught, progesterone levels to ensure you are breeding them at the optimal time. I would also administer a low dosage of amoxicillian to ensure that a virus isn't causing the sperm or eggs to die off.
Good luck
