Postpartum Problem

Question
Hello and thank you for your time and great info!
I am a hobby breeder of Chihuahuas and Toy Fox Terriers on our sixth sucessful litter. Currently have a dam 4 days postpartum having delivered only one pup. Vet xrays 12 hours postpartum showed no further pups with an involuting uterus. No temps, all is well ~ this is her second litter.
Night two postpartum she awakens at 3 am very restless and excited. Got up, took her potty, even fed her some vanilla ice cream. Still very nervous, looking around under the bed, scratching, panting, whining. This lasted a few hours then she settled down. She was definately engorged with milk (having only one pup, who is rapidly gaining) and we addressed that issue (warm compresses, cabbage leaves) and she is much improved there. Hardly any lochia and again no temp (kinda low even at 101.8). She has since continued this strange behavior EVERY night and I am exhausted and frustrated. I just cannot locate or figure out the source of her distress. She seems fine physically but is not really eating (except her vanilla ice cream). I have been doing Tums as well for calcium, only since delivery, along with Nutrical. The Bach's Rescue Remedy does help a little.
I am just really stumped here! Another one of my Chi moms displayed similar behavior postpartum also.
Any ideas? Something I am missing?
Please HELP!! We are all TIRED!
THank you so very much~

Answer
Hi. My best guess here would be to take her in and have her calcium levels checked. Too much or not enough can cause problems. This is all I can think of, especially since you had her checked to see if something was left in there, and she's not running a temp. I would ask to get her levels checked. If that's all fine, then I'm stumped myself, you may want to ask the other expert, she may have better advice.
