Pregnant doberman?

Question
Can you tell me how harmful it is if my doberman was to get pregnant in her first cycle. I know she is still young, she will be one next month. But my stud got to her last night. They were locked but I dont know for how long. Her cycle is almost over so Im not sure if she would actually be pregnant or not. This was a slip up on our part and I dont want any harm to come to her.

Answer
Hi Jodi. One is better than 8-10 months. However, because she's a large breed, she still probably has another year or so of growing. The best thing that you can do if you let her have the pups is to make sure she doesn't get fat, and make sure she gets plenty of exercise. There are always risks when you breed a dog, especially when they're very young. I believe though, that if she recieves good health care and exercise, she should be ok. You can have an x-ray done when she gets further along to see if there are any really large puppies that may cause problems for her. You may also want to think about the mismate shot since it just happened last night. Whatever you choose to do, talk with your vet and figure out what the best course of action would be for your girl. There are pros and cons to the shot and to letting her have the pups. I don't know her health history, so I can't tell you what would be best to do. If she's to have them, exercise, good food, and good vet care will definitely help her have a healthy litter. No one can promise a safe whelping though, for any dog. You can only do your best by her and pray for the best outcome. Good luck, and let me know if I can help with anything else.
