Male dog is trying to cover female but cant

Question
Hi,
I have two toy aussies, neither has ever been bred.  She is in season and this is day ten.  He is very keen at first and tries to cover her, and she is standing for him, flagging her tail, etc.  He goes through the motions but he doesn't actually enter her and then he loses interest.  I have tried holding her for him but then he becomes distracted from her.  He started trying to mount her last night, and again tonight, but they do not get a tie.  I keep them separated but am turning them in together every couple of hours. Ilet them stay together for about 15 minutes but she is now getting frustrated and chasing him around and mounting him, flirting, putting her rear in his face, and he is getting freaked out by her behavior.  Help. I do no want to miss this breeding! What is my window of opportunity here, and what would you suggest?

Answer
She may just be a little bit early. Some females will stand through the whole thing. An experienced male will know when the time is right, and when to ignore her. You may want to try to use a teaser male. Put your male up where he can still see the female, but not be able to get to her. Put a different male on a leash, and let the two 'play'. Just don't actually let them breed. Usually this will show the intended male what he's suppose to be doing, and gets his butt in gear. You'd be surprised at how many times this actually works. If this doesn't work, then you may want to think about AI (artificial insemination). If you act fast, you could use this method for a successful pregnancy. You need to call your vet ASAP if you choose this. Oh! P.S. Most breeders breed their dog on days 11 and 13, or days 12 and 14. So, you may have a few days to get this worked out.
