Question

My 8 grandkids
Hello, My dog had her pups almost four weeks ago. There 8 beautiful strong pups my dog is an Australian Cattle dog. The pups are feeding regularly up until the past two days, buttercup has slowly stopped feeding them. So I made a wet puppy food mixed with natures second best milk and when they are hungry I feed them. My girls nipples are very red and hard and the pups are getting their teeth in. Do you recommend weaning them this early or am I doing the wrong thing. I'm just making sure number one my girl is okay and that the pups get the nutrition they need to grow. I also wanted to ask she seems a little depressed, she isn't her usual happy self even when she had the litter she was happy is there anything I can do to help I give her lots of TLC I treat her like I would if I had a child. I just wonder if letting her have a litter of puppies was a bad idea...

:( Thank you.

Answer
Hi. They're beautiful! It's ok to feed them now. You said mom's breasts are red and hard, then it's probably causing her a lot of pain to nurse them, especially with sharp puppy teeth coming in. A lot of new moms quit at this stage. I would take her in to the vet for a check up, she may be starting mastitis, which can be painful in itself, and may cause a fever and depression. Either way, a trip to the vet is necessary to figure out what's going on with mom. It's probably something simple that the vet can help you with. Good luck, let me know if I can help with anything else.
