Question
When should a dog be bred for the first time? I have a male age 2 and a female age 6 months. I suspect she is coming into heat soon, and have heard it is best to wait for the next cycle. Is this true? Any help is most appreciated! How long is the female in heat?

Answer
Hi Melody. It's best to wait until your female is atleast two years old before breeding her. It will give her plenty of time to finish growing, and be much healthier for her and her puppies. A dog younger than a year old is like a young teenager having a baby. A one year old dog is like a 15 year old having a baby. Just because they can doesn't mean they should. It's best to let them finish growing mentally and physically. A normal heat lasts about 21 days. Good luck!
