Question
Hi i was wondering, my freind has a year old female pitbull and i have a male almost 6 months i was wondering what age they should be before we breed them

Answer
Hi Stephen.  If your friends female is one year old and has completed at least one heat cycle, then she can be mated during her next cycle.

A 6 month male dog can produce a litter, and this is why most veterinarians recommend neutering them at 4 months.  However, is a 6 month old male dog is allowed to mate, in some cases the spermatozoids can be immature which can produce abnormalities in the puppies.

I recommend waiting until your male is at least one year old.

Good luck, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions.

Sincerely,
