Mom just after giving birth

Question
Well First and foremost I guess I should give you some details on the dog.  First is she is a yorkie mix, 10lbs.  She gave birth to two small little boys and is now whining a lot, and is wanting to pick up the puppys (not exactly in the best spots, in the middle of the back and tails sometimes...with a soft mouth though) and seems like she wants to take them out of the box we have set up for her and bring them somewhere else.  The box is an old kennel we had, and we cleaned it all out and put a blanket on the bottom of it with a heating pad under a portion of it, and then taped all the sides down so no puppies can get lost under the blankets.  I am not sure if the box is too big or why she wants to pick up the puppies and bring them somewhere else?  Is there something we are doing wrong, or something that we should do to help make the box where she wants to keep the pups....I am having thoughts that the box may be too big, not sure if you can have too big of a box.  THis is her first liter, and ours too.  I appreciate all the help you can give us on this.  Thank you

Answer
Hi David. Sometimes new moms aren't sure what she's suppose to do. You can try moving her to a smaller box. If you're using a crate, then try putting a blanket over the top to give her privacy. Make sure that there isn't a lot of visitors, no other dogs allowed to go near her or her pups, and keep her room quiet. Mom's will try to move her pups when she doesn't feel safe. Just make sure that there aren't a lot of people coming and going in her room, no visitors until the pups are older. Don't handle the pups a lot at first, let her feel safe. Just keep an eye on them, and handle them when she goes outside to potty. You can try a smaller box, this may help. If the box is too big, and the pups are spread out, it may freak her out because she's having such a hard time keeping them together.  Try doing this, and see how it works out. Let me know if I can help with anything else.
