Question
i have a pregnant olde english and i wanted to know how long is her pregnancy and i was told that olde english bulldogges are free whelpers and dont need a c section is this true or false?

Answer
Hi John.  Most dogs are, or can be, free whelpers - however; there are no guarantees (just like with human pregnancies) things can go wrong.

My specialty is Boston Terriers, and if you believe everything you read, these dogs require C-Sections.  However; I have been breeding them for over 6 years, and I have never had a C-Section birth.  Why?  Because I follow strict breeding guidelines, such as never breeding a female to a male that weight more than 5 lbs heaver than the female, never breeding a female that weighs less than 15 lbs, never breeding a female that my vet does not feel is a good candidate for breed, etc.

The normal gestation period for dogs is between 58 - 63 days, so if your dog is expecting puppies she is approximately one week from her due date.

I can't tell you if your dog is going to have puppies or not, but I can give you some helpful advise, just incase she is.  Here is a link to a Dog Pregnancy Calendar that I use and love.

Just type in the date you mated your female, at the top, and the calendar will print out a complete - week by week- listing of what you should expect.

I also suggest that you start taking your dogs temp and recording it at the same time each day.  The normal dog temp is between 101 - 102.5  In most cases, when the expectant mothers temp drops below 100, she will deliver within 24

You might also want to read some of my answers, posted on this website, to others that have had questions about breeding and whelping.  I think you might find so of my advice helpful.

Good luck, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions.
