Question
My fiance is about to get a boxer puppy. There only 2 weeks old right now. We just went today to pick one out and there skin is crusty and scabby.it looks like it oozed before it scabbed. The one we picked is all down his back and on top of his nose.Is this normal in boxer puppies? She has 3 adults and one of the adults not mother or father was just treated for skin mites could this be it?Or is it from showing them so young.I just dont want to take him and he continue to have skin problems since hes having them now.i would like it to be cleared by 8 weeks.what should i do?

Answer
Hi Brittany. No, this is most definitely not normal. What type of skin mites were the other dog treated for? And was the whelping box, area kept super clean? It's very important to keep the puppies/mom/box clean. It may be something bacterial going on. It could really be caused by many different things. The only thing that can be done is for the breeder to take the pups to the vet immediately to find out what's going on, and to cure it. I wouldn't buy a puppy that has a skin problem without the breeder atleast taking it to the vet to find out what it is. It may be nothing serious. But most things are serious to the very young puppies, and need to be treated right away. If the other dogs had some kind of mite, then the pups very well could have contracted it. Because of their age, the breeder should have already taken them to a vet. She most definitely shouldn't be showing pups so young, and especially when they are having this kind of problem, as you can't know without a vet check if it's contagious or not. I would seriously think twice before buying this puppy if the breeder has done nothing for them to cure this. You don't want to buy a puppy that already has a serious problem that may cost you a lot of money, that maybe can never be cured, or that will cause constant pain or suffering to the puppy. If you are truly set on buying this puppy, you could ask for a 48 hour guarantee. This will allow you to take the puppy to the vet to be checked out. If something serious comes up, you would be able to take the puppy back, and get your money back. Make sure you ask for a money back guarantee. Any good breeder should offer a health guarantee anyway. You could maybe call your vet, and explain to him what's going on with the puppies. He may be better able to tell you what could be going on. You can't force the breeder to take them to the vet. Did she say why she thought the puppies had all of these scabs?
