Male wont mount

Question
The bitch is in her second week. Presently she is in Estrus and has been flagging for the past 3 days. She shows all classic signs of being ready for the male.
This is both their first time, for the Dog, and the Bitch. So therefore, they are both Unsure as to what to do. But my Bitch appears to have a good idea.
I have experience with breeding and whelping, but this challenge is a first for me.

She is willing and ready, but he does not show any signs of mounting. At most, he will lick her vulva throughout the day.

My husband and I have attempted to encourage the Dog to mount, and we have attempted many times, assisted mating.

Not only will the male not mount, he will also not become erect on his own, nor attempt to thrust. It is almost as though he is completely clueless and unable to figure it out.
We have had to perform all the manual stimulation, helping him on top of the Bitch.
We can get him to become erect and to thrust, but the moment we let go of his Penis, he slows and stops.

I am at my wits end and do not know what do to anymore.
I contacted some professional breeders and they have not had experience with this problem either.

I fear AI is my last resort.
Unfortunately because of this experience, I will most likely neuter the Dog and find him a new home. He has turned out to be an extreme disappointment as a Stud for our breeding program.

Is there anyway you can help me with this problem? Is there anyway we can create a successful Tie?

Thank you.

Answer
Hi Amy.  Sound like you are an experienced breeder, and that you are doing everything you can to assist your male.  Because you are already doing almost all the work, I would suggest that you complete the process by preforming an Artificial Insemination.

There are AI kits available to purchase online, that come with a complete set of instructions.  Normally I would suggest that you have your vet preform the procedure, but in your case, I feel you have the experience and will be able to do it yourself.

Good luck, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions.

Sincerely,
Penny DiLoreto
