Question
QUESTION: My female Boxer went into heat (well the first time a seen blood) on the 18th of March. When will she be ready to breed how many days from the 18th. I have read many articles and they all say about the 12-14 days , is this right?

ANSWER: Hi Jennifer. That's correct. Most breeders try on days 11 and 13, or on days 12 and 14. If she started to bleed on the 18th, then you should have started to try on the 28th, starting on day 11 of the cycle. IF you're going to try to breed her this cycle, then you need to hurry up. Tomorrow is day 14. Good luck!

QUESTION: Thank you for getting back to me quickly but it is already too late her swelling is already starting to go down, although the discharge has not stopped. I guess next time I'm going to have to help my male out, he never could get the job done. Cammie, my female weighs 48 pounds. Ranger, my male weighs in at 76 pounds, is he too big for her? By the way Cammie is going to be two on April the 9th and Ranger will be two on June the sixth. Just wondering if maybe this why he couldn't get the job done?
Thank You,
Jennifer

Answer
She's a bit small for a Boxer. You'll just have to make sure that she doesn't get too fat during her pregnancy. If she gets fat, so does the pups, and it'll make her whelping a lot harder. Well, he is young, and if he's inexperienced, that would explain it. About the swelling, you said it was going down. Usually, their vulva will soften up when it's the right time of the cycle to be bred. That may be what's going on with her.
