not enough milk

Question
My miniture schnauzer that is 1 3/4 years old had a litter of 7 puppies.  I am concerned that she does not have enough milk to feed all the puppies.  She looks like she doesn't.  I feed her Science Diet puppy food, hamburger, chicken and other things.  Is there anything that I can give her to help her to produce more milk. I have puppy replacement formula.  If I need to use this how long should I wait?  If I need to feed the replacement formula to the puppies should I give this to the larger puppies and save the mothers milk for the smaller ones or give the formula to all the puppies?  Thank you for your time and advice.  This is my first litter also.

Answer
Hi Annette

Put your female on a high QUALITY puppy food, Orijen or Solid Gold Barking At The Moon comes to mind.

Before putting your pups on formula try rotating the pups.  Do a 4 and 3 split.  Allow each group to feed for an hour and take the other group completely away.  A warming box with warm towel in another room will work.   This give everyone an opportunity to eat and be cleaned by the dam.

Do this ever hour (leaving them all in with the dam at night).  We do this will all our larger litters for the first few weeks so everyone has the same chance.

Good luck
