Normal weight gain/single pup

Question
Our miniature schnauzer gave birth to one puppy a week ago. The puppy seems to be gaining a lot of weight and looks and feels quite chunky to me.  What is normal weight gain (he was about 5 3/4 ounces the day after he was born and on day nine he weighs in at approximately 14 1/2 ounce)?  If he is gaining too much, what are the appropriate measures to take?  Mom is very attention to the puppy.  I don't want to separate them since there are no littermates for the pup to keep warm with.  Also, any other hints as far as caring for a single pup?  Thank you!

Answer
Hi Michelle

It's common for a singleton to grown in leaps and pounds as there is no competition for the buffet line.

It's safe to let him eat his fill, he won't over eat at this age, as he's sleeping as much as he's eating.

With a singleton they have to learn to play and interact with other dogs or animals. At around 4 weeks of age put a mirror in his crate/pen so he can see himself and give him a stuffed animal as a companion.   In my experience, singleton's can be aloof and even aggressive to other dogs (as they get older) but they are usually very good with people.

Good luck
