When my dog goes in labor

Question
I have a pitbull and she is pregnant. The puppies are due this week. I want to know how will we know if she is going in labor?

Answer
First, watch for the mucus plug. It's a clear, glob that comes from the vulva. Usually a dog will go into labor 24-48 hours after she looses it. Second, she'll start to pant a lot, won't be able to get comfortable. This may last up to 24 hours. Third, she may go off of her feed. Fourth, she'll start to dig like crazy, may run around the house looking for a place to hide. This is when you need to keep a really good eye on her. Contractions will start soon. If she has a colored discharge BEFORE the delivery of the first puppy, call the vet right then. Good luck!
