Pug dog first litter

Question
Our female pug is about 2 1/2 years old.  She looks to be expecting her first litter of puppies.  They will be Pug-Zhu's.  How many puppies can we expect to have in a first litter, and what are the most important things we need to know to deliver successfully at home?

Thank you,

Jeff and MJ.

Answer
Hi Guys

Well the number of pups is in direct response to how many eggs the female releases.  Could be 1 could be 6. To know for certain, you would need to do x-rays.

Pugs are notorious for being difficult whelpers.  You want to ensure that your female has a good whelping box, a heater, clean towels, and your vets number on speed dial.  You want to make sure you are home with her and not leave her alone with the pups for the first 24 hours.

The bully breeds have larger heads, so you may want to be prepared to assist in the delivery.  You want to ensure that all the placenta's and afterbirth are expelled, otherwise you have the risk of infection.

There are a number of things that may happen, but then again, it could be smooth sailing.   I would get a book on whelping a litter and do a read through.

Good luck.
