Stopping antibiotics, when can pups nurse

Question
QUESTION: Hi there, I got very concerned when I saw my dog's back breast very swollen and looked a bit lumpy. I massaged with warm towels and took her to the vet. He did a health check (all was fine) and administered an antibiotic needle and a 2 week supply of antibiotic tablets. He suggested that I immediately weaned the pups (they are 4 weeks old and eats softened puppy formula). The mom is not handling the weaning very well and all of her breasts are full of milk.(I have been expressing some of the milk to help relieve the pressure on the udder for mom and there is no discolored fluids in the breasts, it's just milk.. no odor either!). She is BEGGING to feed her babies. I want to discontinue the antibiotics and continue with massaging bag balm ointment. If I were to risk doing this, how long after the last antibiotic tablet can I allow the pups to nurse. What are the potential side effects to the pups if they ingested some milk with a bit of the antibiotic? Thank you in advance for your response and this forum to ask these one-off questions.

ANSWER: Hi Mardy

Mastitis is very common in lactating females.  Depending on the dosage of the antibiotic (it should be a amoxicillian) a mild dose won't affect the pups or dry up her milk, just take care of the infection.

Want you want to ensure is that the pups don't drink from the swollen teat.  Wrap it or cover it so the other teats can be accessed.  Because one teat is impacted does not mean that all the milk is bad.

If she started on antibiotics, it's always recommend that you finish the treatment.

Good luck.

QUESTION: Thank for the info, I feel encouraged already. The antibiotic is called Clavamox 125 mg (amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium tablets U.S.P.) It is to be administered twice daily, every 12 hours for 14 days.
With this new information, can i still allow the pups to nurse from the non affected teats?

Answer
Clavamox is good, it will clear her up and 250 mg will not adversely effect the litter or the milk.   I know from experience (as recent as 2 months ago) she will clear up, the pups can nurse and they will be just fine.

You may also want to stand your female in a tub of warm water. Fill the tub up until the water is covering her teats, gently massage the teat and express the milk.  This will take the swelling down and give your female ease.
