heat cycles of a miniature schnauzer

Question

Heidi and Fritz
We have a 9 month old Miniature Schnauzer that we have had since she was 3 months old. We have not seen her go into heat. When should she go into heat and should be worried at this point if she hasn't yet? We are planning to breed her with our 7 year old male Miniature Schnauzer and as far as we know she hasn't been fixed. About a month of ago or a little longer we noticed our male (Fritz) trying to tag her (Heidi) but she never bled. How do we know if she has been in heat?

Answer
Hi. Smaller breeds tend to come into heat earlier than the larger ones. However, it's normal for a dog this age to not have had a heat cycle yet. Some girls come in later than others. Ask her breed what age her mom was the first time she went into heat. She could have had a silent heat. This is when the dog goes into heat, but doesn't bleed. Usually, after a dog has been into heat, her vulva may stay slightly enlarged, her breasts may be slightly bigger, and their attitude usually changes during the heat cycle, regular or silent heat.If she doesn't come into heat by the time she's a year old, I'd take her in to have things checked up.
