QuestionAloha, my 2 y/o beagle may be pregnant...mixed feelings about it but don't want to make any mistakes. while looking for beagles years ago i remember one owner who mentioned a "false claw" that needs to be removed from the puppies. can i do this or do i need to take them to the vet?
AnswerHi Ron -- what the breeder is referring to is a dew claw. It is slightly above the paw.
You can get a tool that resembles a scissors and remove it yourself. You must be careful to remove the entire claw or it will grow back. Or have the vet do it for you. It must be done at two or three days old.
